You, his morning carer and him discuss the need for a personal alarm for him as he will be on his own more often in the future and he agrees to having one and more importantly wearing it! So you do a ton of research that takes hours to find the 'right' one for him. You explain it to him, he agrees to it. Voilà.
You buy it and patiently explain a number of times what he must do if he needs help and then leave him with it for a few hours. Return to find it on the table with him refusing to wear it.
Quote from him: I want my independence and I don't need that. I don't know how to use it and I don't want to learn either.
That may be true but his main reason is that he thinks I should be at his beck and call 24-7. What else have I been put on this earth for apart from being a dutiful daughter? How could I even contemplate having a life of my own when I should be caring for him. I cared for my Mum for ten years without any renumeration so obviously I should care for him too.
No. Just NO.
Fortunately, I can still return it. At times like that, it is best to give up and not try to encourage him to wear it. The backlash and never-ending grumbles would be too fierce and too much for me to deal with sadly.
I may try again in a month or two with a different type of alarm.
